Reality shows are all over the place. Just switch on the old satellite TV and pick up your clicker. You'll find a dozen or so showing, in high definition detail, celebrities on the lam, jungle survivors, beauty contestants, sports stars trying to relive some former glory, third rate singers attempting to make it big not by singing but by judging others on their vocal chops, and the list goes on. Reality series are here to stay it looks like. Not all pitch nasty contestants against each other, though. Some try to do a little bit of good. For instance, there are the makeover shows. These pair together fashion professionals, spiffy dressers,How Do I Look?: This show takes on one clueless fashion disaster and puts her in a sort of fashion boot camp. The lucky guest gets a whole brand new wardrobe of great looking clothes handpicked by style consultant Finola Hughes. You may recognize Ms. Hughes from daytime soap operas like General Hospital and All My Children. She is also an avid dancer and appeared opposite John Travolta in Staying Alive. There's a slight twist to the show. Besides Hughes, two of the guests friends get to pick out new garb too. The guest has to decide whose collection she likes best.What Not to Wear: This show, which you can duly catch on satellite TV on TLC, has been on for over four years. The show was originally a UK affair, however an American spinoff soon followed. The show features hosts Stacy London and Clint Kelly. Stacy, born and bred in New York, attended Vassar and worked as a fashion assistant at Vogue. Later she become senior editor at Elle magazine. Her celebrity clients include Kate Winslet and Liv Tyler among others. Clint earned his fashion chops working for Marie Claire and Mademoiselle. In the show, the two guide one hapless fashion victim, offering them tips for picking the best clothes to flatter their features. Each contestant gets to go on a shopping spree; however, Clint and Stacy are always watching fro m behind the scenes, ready to critique every pick.The Swan: The Swan is makeover in the extreme. The premise, women, characterized as very ugly, are taken through a series of plastic surgery procedures to drastically change their look. Each of the contestants is assigned a panel of consultants to work on her new look: a dentist, plastic surgeon, coach, therapist, and a fitness trainer who come together to design a beauty regime. The progress of each woman is tracked and in the end three contestants are left. The winner gets to be the Swan. The show isn't on anymore but you can still find reruns of this somewhat grotesque beauty pageant on satellite internet.Queer Eye for the Straight Guy: Watch this show on Bravo. Queer Eye was the frontrunner in makeover, fashion shows. You take a bunch of queer guys and get them to makeover one straight guy. The crew teach their 'victim' how to dress, grooming tips, how to cook, and how to woo their significant others.
