Watching TV on a PC isn't especially new. There have been hardware cards available that allow you watch TV on your computer for some time. I was at the hardware store at the weekend and saw some nice cards that would let me watch a lot of the terrestrial channels available here in the UK 'free'.
But watching satellite channels on your PC is a relatively new way to do it. The main difference is that you don't need any hardware to do it. It's all done with software.
1 What is it?
Satellite TV for PC is a bit like watching a movie you've downloaded on the web. Stations appear in a media player window and you get full screen video and high quality sound. The quality of the video varies from channel to channel. There are many channels that are in a high enough quality and make for great viewing. Most channels can be watched at full screen and look great.2 Does it really work?
I was really skeptical when I read you could watch TV on your PC just by installing some software. Luckily for me, one of the first products I tested was a really good one. I discovered it was possible to enjoy a huge array of channels on an average PC. So, yes - it really does work. Just make sure you get the right tool for the job. (More on this at the bottom of this page...)3 Available channels
Because there are literally thousands of channels available for to watch, I've not had a chance to check them all out yet. However I've found there's channels to suit every imaginable taste. Everything from sports, documentaries, movies, arts and more. Whatever you're into, you'll find plenty to inform and entertain you.4 What you need to get started?
Although some sites tell you that you can view the TV channels on your PC with a slow connection (dialup) I'd recommend a broadband connection to get the most out of it. Satellite TV on a PC is really only practical if you're on broadband. Sorry dialup users but I'd rather be honest that see you disappointed.
PC wise you don't need a high end PC or graphics card to watch TV online. A 1000mhz PC with an average graphics card will be more than enough. You'll need a sound card too. You don't need any hard disk space as the movies are not stored on your computer. You watch them live - just like you do on TV.5 OK now I'm really confused - where do I start?
A program called SatelliteSoft. I've bought and tested every package I could find and this one easily outstrips the others - by a long way.
