If you're look for sports, it's understandable that cricket is no substitute for NFL Sunday Ticket. However, for a little change-up, and to get twice as much action from your daily dose of television drama series, try out some of these best-bets from the Brits on BBC America.
If you're missing new episodes of Friends...
Make some new ones on Coupling! Watch as a group of 6 thirtysomething friends move through various stages of life and love, with all the exciting dramatics and inter-personal dynamics one could ever ask for in a TV drama. Get to know Steve, Jane, Oliver, Susan, Patrick, Sally, and Jeff, albeit through your satellite TV, on BBC America.
If The Office is your escape to reality....
Try watching...The Office! Yes, the same title, and the little-known (stateside anyway) English predecessor to the American version. If you can't get enough of Michael Scott and his bad boss antics, then you're in luck! Ricky Gervais brings you a whole new batch of awkward comedy as David Brent, lower middle-manager of a paper supply merchant outside of London. With a genius for borderline-painful comedy, Gervais and his cast of dead-end employees bring that dirt-dry English humor to the modern workplace in the British version (think staplers stuck in jelly) of The Office.
If Sex and the City left you wanting more than a happy ending...
Be sure not to miss Mistresses. Maybe it was time for a new city anyway. These four friends bring a whole new kind of naughty to the dating game. Meet Katie- a doctor having an affair with a terminally ill patient, Trudi- a 9/11 widow, Siobhan- having a steamy workplace affair, and Jessica- think Samantha with dark hair.
If Top Chef on Bravo is your taste...
Last Restaurant Standing is sure to hit the spot! Michelin-starred and world-renowned, restaurateur Raymond Blanc hosts as 9 couples fight for the chance to partner with him and open a new restaurant. As a twist on the old "weekly challenge" motif of competitive reality TV, Blanc's contestants take over abandoned restaurants while their daily trials and triumphs are filmed 24/7. Given only a week to make it work, this high pressure reality hit is sure to please all the senses... even though HD TV doesn't yet come with smell-o-vision. We'll keep hoping for next season.
If Kath & Kim are that right kind of dysfunctional then...
Get out of line with Absolutely Fabulous. Starring Edina (played by Jennifer Saunders) and her best mate Patsy (Joanna Lumley) these two are on a constant trip down Memory Lane, reminiscing about the old days as they dazedly float through the day at present. Don't worry about losing that mother-daughter dynamic, as Saffy, Edina's super "straight" daughter provides enough a generation gap to cover it. Prizing itself on NOT being politically correct, this duo is, well, absolutely fabulous.
If 24 leave you wanting a little more time...
Check out MI-5. Akin to the CIA in the United States, MI-5 is a national security organization in the UK, of which Section B is followed in this heart-pounding, fast-action series. Highly complex plans must be unraveled and unwoven from the interpersonal ties formed in and around Section B. See how the Brits' handle drama by following this group of top agents in the counter-terrorism division.
These and other great BBC programs are all available, thanks to satellite TV, from the comfort of your living room sofa- no passport required. Check out BBC America today to get a little viewing variety!
