The romantic comedy used to be a genre that could make audiences laugh across the country and entertain viewers with sweet and silly situations and battles of the sexes. Think about the old romantic comedies that might come and play on your satellite TV set these. Older films like Pillow Talk or The Seven Year Itch still manage to be relevant and hysterical today. They are well made, and well-written, and the plots transcend across time. Todays romantic comedies, however, tend to be formulaic drivel with bad acting, interchangeable stars, and lame plots. So next time you are watching satellite TV and flipping between channels, do not get stuck on one of these romantic comedy landmines. You will never get those 90 minutes back, so be sure to choose wisely. Here is a list of what to avoid when watching satellite TV.
1. Gigli
This movie is one of the most infamous box office flops in the history of American cinema. The only upside to this film is that it was so unpopular that you are unlikely to stumble upon it while watching satellite TV, unless you have a quasi-ironic so-bad-its-good station in your channel package. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, who were Hollywoods most famous couple at the time of the movies release, starred in this horrendous film, but even their collective star power could not bring people to the theaters (where the movie only stayed for 3 weeks after its release). What was the plot about? No one knows, nor do they care.
2. Fools Gold
Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson had teamed up before in the successful and mildly entertaining How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days. But this 2008 comedy took things to the next, and significantly more painful to watch, level. The two blonde actors play a married couple on the brink of divorce who somehow end up on a treasure quest in Bermuda. Or was it the Bahamas? Perhaps it was Trinidad and Tobago. No matter: the islands are interchangeable, just as the script and the plot is. So if you see McConaughey and Hudson on screen together, wait to see what they are doing before flipping onwards to the next channel. If they are in swimming gear on a beach, move on as fast as you possible can. Your satellite TV watching time is precious, and should not be wasted on this filth.
3. 27 DressesKatherine Heigl is one quite possibly the only actor from the hit medical drama Greys Anatomy to transform her satellite TV stardom into a movie career. While she had a beloved role in the Judd Apatow comedy Knocked Up, she has since gone on to star in one bland and mildly offensive romantic comedy after the other. 27 Dresses may be the worst one yet, in which Heigl plays the girl who is always the bridesmaid, never the bride. With Heigls tall and blonde good lucks, and spunky charm, this plot point is just about as unbelievable as romantic comedy plot points come.
