Law & Order is one of the most popular television dramas in the history of American media. The flagship series ran for a remarkable 20 seasons, and was actually incredibly popular when it was unexpectedly canceled in the spring of 2010. Almost every single one of its numerous spin-off series have been popular: Law & Order Special Victims Unit (often short-formed to SVU), Law & Order Criminal Internet, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Law & Order: UK, and Law & Order: Trial By Jury (the only dud). If you have a satellite TV connection, you can easily catch them all. But if you are surfing channels, find that multiple shows are playing at the same time, and do not know which one to pick, here is a breakdown of the original and its various spin-offs!
1. Law & Order
This is the original show that Americans grew to love over 20 years, featuring such acting greats as Sam Waterston, Jerry Orbach, S. Epathka Merkerson, Michael Moriarty, Angie Harmon, and Benjamin Bratt. That classic duhn duhn sound (how one is supposed to spell it remains an eternal mystery) has become recognizable around the world, as well as being one of the top cell phone ringtones of all time! The series is about cops and district attorneys who prosecute murders in New York City. The show opens with the discovery of the murdered persons body, proceeds to the criminal investigation by the New York Police Department (NYPD), moves on to the trial, and ends in either the jurys decision to convict or pardoned the accused. Numerous plot twists and legal or philosophical questions occur in the intervening hour. This is a classic choice for a night spent watching satellite TV.
2. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU)
This is the original spin-off, and at 10 years old one of the most popular. The format is similar to that of the flagship show, except that the crimes that it deals with are generally sexual in nature, or involve children. Detectives Olivia Benson and Elliott Stabler (played by Mariska Hargitay and Christ Meloni, respectively) are some of the most well-recognized faces on satellite TV, in addition to supporting characters played by Ice-T and B.D. Wong.
3. Law & Order: Criminal Intent
This spin-off is most reminiscent of the other numerous cop shows that now exist on satellite TV, such as Crime Scene Unit (CSI), Numbers, or Cold Case. It involves a more psychological approach to solving the crime, and features scenes of the crime taking place in retrospect, which the first two series do not do.
4. Law & Order: Trial By Jury
This is the only Law & Order spin-off that did not quite find success. It was started by Jerry Orbach, who played the classic Lenny Briscoe on the original series, shortly after he left the show. Orbach was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer shortly after production began, and died within a few months. The show, sadly, did not go on to achieve success without its founder at the realm.
