Satellite technology is evolving all the time with more and more forms of communications being transmitted from satellites. Satellite television was an innovation in the 1970's that offered subscribers access to more television networks with the installation of a satellite dish. Satellite telephones are available for use in the most remote locations. In the last decade satellite radio became the latest method of broadcasting radio. The latest in satellite communications is satellite internet, which allows the user to have broadband internet access by connecting to a satellite.
Satellite television made its way into American homes in the late 1970s. Satellite television provides subscribers with access to a multitude of additional television networks. As the technology has progressed many things have changed from the original satellite television. Originally, the satellite dish was a monstrous piece of equipment. In some cases the dish was taller than the house that it provided the service to. In addition the dish was typically black and metal and was a real eyesore. In the 1990's the dishes began to become smaller and were the same size as one provided by the satellite providers currently. In addition to the modern dish, the providers now offer subscribers hundreds of channels.
Another form of a satellite communication device is the satellite telephone. Satellite phones provide the user the capability to contact someone by telephone from almost anywhere in the world. These phones are often used by adventurers whose temptation for risk takes them to remote places. Most often these satellite phones are used in the event of an emergency because they provide telephone access in places far out of reach of a cellular network. The phone can be a reassurance for hikers climbing mountains in the event of a storm or avalanche.
Satellite radio is a service that has become available in the U.S. and Canada. Satellite radio is available for both the car and home. It is becoming more common that new cars come with a satellite radio receiver and antenna factory installed in the car. There are two providers in the U.S. that recently merged. Satellite radio offers the subscribers over a hundred radio channels, most of which are commercial free. Also, the satellite radio is not controlled by the FCC so censorship does not apply. The users can choose from many genres of music, such as blues, jazz, country, rock, hip-hop and reggae. Satellite radio is available in the most remote locations of the U.S. so the user can listen uninterrupted wherever the road takes them.
The most recent innovation in internet communication is satellite internet. With this service, homeowners in very remote locations of the United States can have broadband internet access. In most of these places the only alternative is dial-up internet which operates at a speed not even comparable to the satellite internet. This form of internet can also prove to be a great alternative to DSL service because only the subscriber is receiving transmission from the provider, where as with DSL everyone connected to the same telephone line is sharing the bandwidth.
Almost every form of communication is now available via a satellite connection. For many Americans living outside the major metropolitan areas, satellite communication provides customers with equivalent television and internet access.
